Worcester Small Boats Head 2025 – Preview

Making its debut on the JRN calendar, Worcester Rowing Club’s Small Boats Head will showcase rowing in the heart of Worcestershire.

Alongside its established Autumn and Spring regattas and the ever-popular Worcester Head, this event reinforces WRC’s position as a hub for rowing in the region.

Raced over 4.5k, this event provides an excellent opportunity for crews to test their mettle over long distances, aiming to hone their technique and endurance ahead of major races such as Fours Head and the Head of the River Race.

Open Fours

With entries from Birmingham University, St Edwards, Monmouth and the hosts Worcester, the open fours promise to be one of the headline battles of the day. For Birmingham and Worcester especially, this is about more than just an early-season test. Both crews are familiar with these waters, and both will be determined to lay down a marker of intent.

Expect margins to be razor-thin. Every steering call, every adjustment of rhythm could prove decisive as these crews fight for control over the 4.5km of demanding river. When the results come in, the question will be simple: Who held their hand in the flame the longest?

Junior Events

Healthy competition is assured in the junior camp with sizable entries for RGS, King’s, Hereford Cathedral and Cheltenham College. With Worcester, King’s and RGS all sharing the same water, this local event will undoubtedly bring school rivalries to the surface.

Women’s Events

With both coxed and coxless fours only being raced by Cardiff University and Worcester, there’ll be nowhere to hide.

Regular participants at Worcester events, CURC, will benefit from their familiarity with the course. Having performed well at the recently concluded Worcester Spring Regatta, they’ll return confident and ready to go toe-to-toe with the home crew.

WRC’s senior women, meanwhile, enter this season on the back of a regatta campaign that saw them shine at both Henley Royal Regatta and Henley Women’s Regatta. Determined to open their season with a display of strength, they won’t be relying on home advantage alone. Every stroke will be delivered with purpose, composure and intent, a statement of the squad’s depth and ambition, and a sign that further success could well be on the horizon.

Overview

With a varied draw spanning schools, universities and clubs, Worcester Small Boats Head has all the ingredients for a competitive day of racing. For many, it will be an early indicator of winter training progress, providing crews with a strong foundation to continue honing their skills throughout the season.
