WinterWedstrijden 2026 – Women’s Single Sculls Preview

After a harsh winter period, with both snow and frost, rowing will be back in full swing this weekend. Now that almost every senior rower has been to training camp (for some clubs in the north of the Netherlands, this was really necessary due to the persistent frost on the water), everyone is hoping to be fresh and ready to go at the start. The winter competitions are a perfect opportunity to see what the winter training has achieved.

Tosca Kettler

One of the big contenders on Saturday is Tosca Kettler. A former lightweight lady who has several international appearances to her name, she will also be competing for that medal this Saturday. With her rock-solid performance at the Hell of the North last November, she has proven that she can brave all conditions.

Kim Tijhuis

The past few weeks have been exceptional for weather, with temperatures sometimes differing by as much as 10 degrees between the south and north of the Netherlands. This meant that rowers from Groningen had to cover their daily distances on the water much more often. The only question is whether this will affect Kim Tijhuis, who now has plenty of experience in the skiff.

Femke van der Vliet

Another lady who has mainly competed in lightweight events is Femke van der Vliet. This Triton member has been around for a while and proved last year that she can be a notable favourite in the winter competitions. Even without too much preparation in the boat, she made it to first place. With a few extra metres on the water, she is sure to do well.

Prediction

It promises to be a spectacular event on Saturday. With such experienced rowers, this will be a race with a very exciting outcome. Van der Vliet and Tijhuis will make it difficult for Tosca Kettler, but it is not unlikely that she will be the fastest to cross the finish line.
