Situated in Molesey, South West London, Wimbledon High School Boat Club has made its mark on the women’s junior rowing scene. Wimbledon High School provides its rowers with a calm stretch of the Thames, facilitating training that has brought immense success over the years.
Wimbledon High School, founded in 1880, saw the establishment of its boat club in the 2000s by British world champion and Olympic silver medalist Gillian Lindsay. Set up as an extracurricular program for the school, Wimbledon famously overachieves. Despite its small size, it never fails to produce top-tier athletes, frequently competing against larger programs. The club’s commitment to rowing is evident in its plethora of strong results.
In 2023, Wimbledon achieved a silver medal at the National Schools’ Regatta and also performed well at Henley Women’s Regatta, further solidifying their strong standing in the junior women’s rowing scene. Medals at the London Youth Games, the Junior Inter-Regional Regatta, and National Schools’ Regatta punctuate the Wimbledon seasons. Most recently, in October 2024, three Wimbledon High athletes were selected to take part in the U19 GB trials in Boston, highlighting the talent within the current cohort.
“Rowing at WHBC is about more than just the results; it’s about fostering a sense of community and resilience,” said Senior Coach Sophie Barrett. With a history in elite rowing, Barrett brings a wealth of first-hand experience to the club, focusing on both technique and teamwork as the foundations of success. Under her supervision, Wimbledon High athletes have not only succeeded within the junior scene but many continue to excel as collegiate-level athletes afterward.
Wimbledon alumni encapsulate a wide range of rowers who have represented Great Britain on the international stage, a testament to the club’s capability. “The coaches really invest in every athlete, regardless of their starting point,” says former captain Emma Collins, who now rows for Cambridge.
It is clear that while Wimbledon High School Boat Club may still be working to build its legacy, it is already making its mark on the junior rowing scene.
