Princeton University vs Brown University
At Lake Carnegie, the Content Cup between Brown and Princeton featured one of the most electrifying 1v races of the year. Princeton’s top boat set a new course record of 5:20.8, narrowly defeating Brown’s 5:21.3 in a dramatic sprint to the line. Brown jumped out to an early lead and held a slim margin through most of the race, never more than three seats, but Princeton surged in the final 100 meters to row through and claim the victory by less than half a length. Despite the 1v loss, Brown showed their depth by taking wins in the 2v, 3v and 5v events, highlighting the strength of their program across the board. I am certain Brown will seek vengeance in two weeks at Eastern Sprints.
Dartmouth University vs Northeastern University
Dartmouth continued its historic regular season campaign with another clean sweep, this time over Northeastern on Lake Morey. The 1v posted a solid 5:34.07, comfortably ahead of Northeastern’s 5:41.00, winning by open water. Dartmouth won every race on the day, concluding an undefeated regular season, a landmark achievement that sets them up as a serious contender heading into the postseason.
B1G Row: University of California Berkley vs Stanford University
Out west, California dominated their B1G Row matchup against Stanford. Cal’s 1v crossed the line in 5:52.2, asserting full control from start to finish, with Stanford trailing behind at 6:02.1. The Golden Bears looked strong and composed, using this race as a final tune-up ahead of their conference championship. In a rare midweek race,
Smith Cup: Harvard vs Northeastern
Harvard and Northeastern faced off in a local rivalry for the Smith Cup, which had been rescheduled from May 3 to April 30. Harvard made the most of the opportunity, winning the 1v race in 6:16.0, just ahead of Northeastern’s 6:18.3 in a classical Charles River headwind. The Crimson showed consistency across the board, sweeping all boat classes despite the disruption in the schedule, signalling their readiness for the Ivy League championship push.
Cooper River Classic (Madeira Cup) : Penn, Cornell, Oregon State, Holy Cross
The Cooper River Classic, held over two days (May 2–3), featured a packed slate of racing among Penn, Cornell, Oregon State, and Holy Cross. On Day 1, Penn’s 1V edged Oregon State in 5:30.6, and again later in 5:47.9, while Cornell took a close win over Holy Cross, 5:41.6 to 5:46.5. Day 2 brought even more competitive action: Oregon State bounced back to beat Holy Cross (5:48.6 to 5:51.5), but the highlight was the Madeira Cup, where Penn defeated Cornell with an impressive 5:32.7 to 5:42.6. Penn also added a second win over Holy Cross (5:36.6), and Cornell wrapped up the weekend by beating OSU in 5:46.9, showing steady form through the regatta.
Windermere Cup: Washington, New Zealand, UCLA, Gonzaga
Finally, in Seattle, the Windermere Cup offered a marquee matchup between the University of Washington and the New Zealand National Team. UW won the Twilight Sprints (600m sprint) on Friday and followed up with a decisive victory in Saturday’s main event, clocking 5:30.1 in the 1V. The win further cements Washington’s status as the team to beat in the U.S. at the moment. Their depth was equally impressive, with the 2V and 3V winning comfortably over Gonzaga and UCLA in 5:33.8 and 5:38.0, respectively. With their sights set on the Pac-12 Championship in two weeks.
