All eyes will be on the championship women’s sculls at this year’s Vesta Scullers Head of the River, as some of the country’s finest athletes take to the Tideway. Raced over the full Championship course from Mortlake to Putney, the event consistently draws an elite field, and this category promises a mix of experienced internationals and rising rowing talent. With the Tideway’s unique conditions providing their own challenge, competitors will face a test of technical skill, stamina, and river craft. As the first major race of the year, the Scullers’ Head offers these athletes the perfect opportunity to set the tone for the season and stake their early claims in the rankings.
Nottingham Rowing Club – Baker
Just five years after first picking up an oar, former netballer Baker has already carved out a remarkable rowing career. Despite battling injury, she struck gold this summer to become a world champion, adding to back-to-back appearances for GB at the U23 World Rowing Championships. In 2024, she raced the women’s double for GB, triumphed at Henley Women’s Regatta in the championship quad, and continues her rapid rise as part of British Rowing’s Performance Development Academy.
Leander Club – Robinson-Ranger
Lining up with serious credentials, this former University of London athlete already has a string of standout results to her name. Robinson-Ranger struck gold with Wales in the women’s eight, lifted the championship eights title at Henley Women’s Regatta, and has proven herself on the bigger stage with runner-up finishes at both the Wingfield Sculls and the 2022 World Rowing Championships. However, most relevant to this weekend is her Wingfield performance, raced over the same stretch of the Tideway—albeit in the opposite direction. This will undoubtedly make her one of the most prepared single scullers to take to the river this weekend.
University of London Boat Club – Martin
Martin has rapidly established herself as one of Britain’s rowing talents. She has twice claimed gold at the U23 World Rowing Championships in the women’s four, including setting a course record. She has represented the ULBC as Women’s Captain and won the U23 pairs category at GB trials in February and April 2024. On the domestic front, she has competed in elite races, including the Wingfield Sculls, one of the most prestigious single scull events on the Thames. She is a powerhouse of experience with sweeping and clearly knows how to manoeuvre a single scull on the Tideway, the boat known for being the most challenging psychologically.
