Australia’s history in the junior double is one of some pedigree. We’ve fielded a men’s boat four times in the past six regattas we’ve travelled to, winning twice and securing a bronze last year. This year’s combination are both international debutants who, after successful domestic seasons, will pair up in an exciting combination under the tutelage of Olympic bronze medallist Rowena Meredith.
Luke Purdie – Hunter Valley Grammar School (NSW)
Novacastrian Luke Purdie had one of the busiest national championships of any athlete in March, taking to the course 12 times over six events, and bringing home two gold and two bronze medals for his efforts, including several where he raced as a lightweight. Luke has been at the pointy end of U19 competition for a couple of seasons now, and the time spent racing alongside senior and U23 athletes as a lightweight should hold him in good stead amongst the pressure of his first international meet.
Tobias Elias – Mosman Rowing Club (NSW)
Often touted as one of the most enjoyable names to call in commentary, Tobias Elias will make his Australian debut off the back of a dominant domestic season. State and national champion in the U19 single and double, there’s no doubt that the Dutchman is more than deserving of his place in this combination. Watching Tobias race over the past two seasons has been a pleasure; the grit and intensity he brings to a crew will serve this double well at the U19 World Rowing Championships.
