This coming Saturday, 17 May, will mark 159 years since Trinity Regatta was first held along the River Liffey. With only two racing lanes, the event adopts a knockout style format, with only the winner of each race progressing to the next round. With only two entries in the men’s intermediate eight, the event will be a straight final with the winners taking home the coveted Ladies’ Challenge Cup.
Dublin University Boat Club (DUBC)
The men’s intermediate eight from DUBC will want to put on a strong display of rowing this weekend at their home regatta, after a disappointing fourth-place finish at last month’s university championships. However, this crew seems to have undergone some personnel changes, with only three athletes from last month’s event keeping their seats in the boat. Will these changes help DUBC capture the speed needed to catch Commercial?
Commercial Boat Club
Last year, Commercial Boat Club reigned supreme in this event, taking home the win at last year’s national championships. We have yet to see Commercial Boat Club field an intermediate eight this season at any major domestic regattas, with an apparent focus on the senior category. It will be interesting to see if they will be able to recapture the form that saw them claim victory last summer.
Prediction
Whilst there is little to go on to measure Commercial Boat Club’s form in the intermediate category this year, they have fielded multiple strong crews in the senior events, suggesting a great deal of depth in their squad. I predict we will see this depth this weekend when Commercial beats DUBC comfortably.
