The men’s senior fours event at St. Michael’s Head of the River Race in Limerick promises to show a powerful line-up of crews with a number of the top clubs in Ireland attending. This race will require crews to blend strength and endurance to secure a top spot in a long, competitive race.
University of Galway Boat Club (UGBC)
UGBC has entered four crews in this event, making it a competitive race within the club to see which crew returns home with bragging rights. The UGBC A four containing Ciaran O’Sullivan, Shane Rafferty, James Murphy, and Shane McLoughlin is undoubtedly eyeing the top spot. This lineup consists of powerful athletes, with Rafferty having represented Ireland at two U23 World Rowing Championships in the quad and at the U19 World Rowing Championships in the double. It is likely the A crew will be the benchmark in this race. Although UGBC B and C also have strong lineups, with seasoned internationals such as Brian Colsh, Donagh Claffey and Donnach Keeley, it is highly doubtful that these crews will be in a position to realistically challenge for the top spot.
Commercial Rowing Club
Another club that has entered four crews is Commercial Rowing Club from Dublin. Their A crew, with Aaron Hurley at stroke and former U23 Irish lightweight Niall Beggan in the two seat, will be expected to be a very close competitor to UGBC A. Commercial B and C provide the club with even more depth, and Commercial D further increases the club’s chances of finishing among the top places.
Cork Boat Club
Cork has two senior fours in the lineup. The A crew, comprising Michael Cronin, Barry O’Flynn, Thomas Earley, and Peter Grogan, will be the one likely to challenge for the win. The crews of Cork are always well-drilled and efficient. Their B crew will be equally eager to stay competitive and keep pace with the leading crews.
Castleconnell Rowing Club
Castleconnell is going to enter a senior four with Sean Neville at stroke. They are traditionally known for aggressive, hard-working crews, so they won’t get intimidated by the large number of crews entered by other clubs. If they get a good rhythm early on, I believe they can really surprise in a positive way and potentially claim a top place. Furthermore, Castleconnell’s close proximity to the course may give them a slight edge over travelling competitors.
Galway Rowing Club
Galway is represented by James Whyte, Mark Walzer, Daniel Allen, and Sam Mannion, bringing a balanced and competent squad. Although they may be a bit under the radar, a strong row could allow them to challenge the more established names, especially if the weather is complicated.
Prediction
With UGBC and Commercial providing the most entries in this event, the evidence points to them as the favourites, with Cork BC also in contention with their two crews. Although Head races often reward composure over sheer speed, any crew that can put together a hardworking, strong performance will likely find itself rising in the rankings.
