In its 128-year history, Saint Ignatius’ College Riverview has engraved itself alongside the top rowing programmes in Australia. The boys, based out of Lane Cove, have experienced great success in recent years, proving the depth of the programme.
The first eight had many notable moments in the 2022/2023 and 2024/2025 season. In the 2025 season, they were “Grand Slam Champions”, remaining undefeated throughout the season in the AAGPS and nationally, with margins of at least two seconds in both seasons. Additionally, this crew was the only school from Australia to enter the Princess Elizabeth Challenge Cup at Henley Royal Regatta. Notable crew members include Harry Kelly (class of 2025), who jumped from the fourth four in 2024 to the first eight in 2025, and William Bryant and Julian Carr, who jumped straight into the crew from the Year 10 first eight. The Captain of Boats and coxswain, Henry Burton (class of 2025), who had been in the first eight for the third year in a row, coxed the 2024 Australian Men’s Under 19 Four to victory in Canada, alongside Ambrose Hennessy (class of 2024), who was offered a scholarship to Boston University.
The club boasts some impressive alumni, who continued rowing after wearing the iconic navy and white. Daniel Noonan (class of 1997) famously stroked the first eght to Riverview’s historic first win of the Gold Cup, won gold at the 2011 World Rowing Championships in Bled in the men’s quad, and obtained bronze at the 2012 London Olympics in the men’s quad.
Simon Nola (class of 2001) rowed in the undefeated second four, which won by seven seconds at the 2001 AAGPS Head of the River. He went on to win silver in the Men’s Lightweight Eight at the 2013 World Rowing Championships in Chungju and came fourth in the men’s quad in the 2013 World Rowing Cup 1 in Sydney.
