Remenham Challenge 2025 – Open Preview

The Tideway is gearing up for another classic Remenham Challenge this Saturday, as the founding Remenham clubs go head-to-head from Chiswick Pier to Putney. With the open eights split into Championship, Club, and Development categories, spectators can expect everything from seasoned internationals to club stalwarts and eager novices taking their first strokes in racing conditions.

Open Championship Eights

Seven crews will contest the Open Championship eights this weekend. London Rowing Club arrive off the back of a phenomenal previous season and an equally strong start to this one, and they will field two entries. While exact line-ups are not known, at least one of their boats appears to include athletes from last season’s Thames Challenge Cup winning crew at Henley Royal Regatta. This boat was a step ahead of the rest of the field, so should a similar lineup be racing this weekend I would be placing them as front runners for the win. Thames Rowing Club will counter with three Championship entries, ensuring that the ever-fierce Tideway rivalry between the two clubs remains very much alive. The Victor Ludorum returned to TRC in 2024, despite being pipped by just two seconds for the Championship Eights win – a result that the men of Thames will no doubt be looking to overturn this time around. Molesey Boat Club and Kingston Rowing Club complete the field. Both are respected programmes, but they do not appear to match the depth or top-end speed of Thames and London this year.

Open Club Eights

The Club category promises some of the closest racing of the day, with sixteen entries from across the Remenham clubs. As in the Championship event, the spotlight is likely to fall on the long-standing rivalry between Thames Rowing Club and London Rowing Club, with TRC entering two crews and LRC fielding four. Performances at this season’s Fours Head showed just how evenly matched the two squads are at club level, setting up what should be a compelling battle for the top spots.

Vesta Rowing Club also bring significant depth with four entries, while Molesey Boat Club add further strength to the field with two. Both clubs are among the strongest domestic programmes in the country, but based on recent form, they may still struggle to match the sheer depth and firepower that LRC and TRC currently possess. Staines Boat Club round out the club entries, and will be looking to make their mark on the men’s sweep scene, putting themselves in the mix with some of their more established Remenham counterparts.

Open Development

With many Remenham clubs now operating high-performance senior programmes, novice athletes are becoming rarer at these top clubs – which leaves Vesta Rowing Club as the sole contributor to the Development category. For Vesta’s newcomers, this weekend offers an invaluable opportunity to gain race experience on home water and take their first steps into senior racing. With an impressive five eights entered here, the future certainly looks bright for these up and coming athletes.

Predictions

The top end of the London Rowing Club squad was simply untouchable last season, and if elements of that crew are lining up in the Championship Eights this weekend, it’s hard to see any other boat getting close. The Club Eights category should deliver a far tighter contest, between London Rowing Club and Thames Rowing Club, but even there, LRC appear to have the edge. With no other clubs represented in this category, Vesta Rowing Club are guaranteed a win in the development eight.
