Reading University Head of the River 2025 – Women’s Junior 16 Quads Preview

This article was written prior to the event cancellation.

As the head season draws to a close, six women’s Junior 16 quads will take to the waters of the Thames for the 4.6km race into Reading.

Marlow Rowing Club

Marlow Rowing Club has two crews racing in this category: Moss and Ioras, who will set off first and fourth, respectively. After coming out of a successful 2024 with a win at Reading Amateur Head, Moss has continued to demonstrate their rowing prowess in 2025 when they secured the top spot at Wycliffe Big Head. Ioras is another crew with a successful season behind them. At Reading Amateur Regatta, Ioras was part of the winning women’s Junior 15 eight. This crew has also succeeded nationally as they raced in the A-final of the women’s Junior 15 second quads at the National Schools’ Regatta.

Henley Rowing Club

A club with a history of success, Henley Rowing Club also has two crews who entered this race. Jackson, setting off second after Marlow, has a chance at gold after their astonishing performance at the National Schools’ Regatta last May, where they placed second overall. This commendable performance will hopefully lead them to try their hardest to push away from Cottam (the other Henley crew in this category). This should mean we see fierce intra-club competition on the Thames this weekend!

Reading Rowing Club

Moon from Reading Rowing Club, who will be setting off last in this race, is yet another crew that has had success from the 2024 regatta season. Moon raced at Staines Amateur Regatta and the women’s Junior 15 double and ended up winning by a highly impressive five lengths. This shows the speed and talent of the athletes that make up this crew and should hopefully lead to some close racing, which will be exciting for competitors and spectators alike.

Prediction

I think all the crews in this race have a chance of winning, but I think Moss from Marlow Rowing Club, with their spectacular start to the season, will just beat Henley Rowing Club’s Jackson to the gold.
