On 18 May, four women’s Junior 18 crews will compete at Poplar Regatta. With only a week before the National Schools’ Regatta, Poplar provides the perfect opportunity for crews to sharpen their technique, build confidence, and execute their race plans under pressure. It also offers a chance to scope out the competition and make any final tactical adjustments before the big stage. Although only four crews are racing, the field is tight and looks exciting and closely contested.
Shiplake College
Shiplake College are the favourite for the win, having produced a fantastic result at the Schools’ Head of the River, finishing almost 30 seconds ahead of Tideway Scullers. Their performance showed their strength over the long distance, but they’ve also proven themselves over 2km, finishing third at Wallingford Regatta behind Henley and St. Edward’s (two of the strongest contenders this season) despite missing a couple of athletes.
Lady Eleanor Holles
Chasing them closely are Lady Eleanor Holles (LEH). While Shiplake showed clear dominance over the longer course at the Schools’ Head of the River, LEH were just 0.4 seconds behind them in the final at Wallingford. That incredibly narrow margin sets the stage for a thrilling showdown at Poplar, and with LEH no doubt hungry to turn the tables, the race could go either way.
Latymer Upper School and Tideway Scullers School
The battle for third looks equally tight, with Latymer and Tideway Scullers separated by only a second in the heats at Wallingford. Both clubs have strong reputations and experienced crews, so it will come down to who can best hold their form under pressure.
Prediction
It is hard to look past Shiplake College for the win. Their women’s programme continues to build momentum and they’ll be looking to sharpen up ahead of a showdown with Headington in two weeks’ time.
