Ten scullers will take to the start line at Nottingham City Regatta this weekend, all of whom will be looking to enjoy some good water and competitive racing.
Many of the scullers entered are regulars on the circuit: Naomi Holland (Upper Thames), Caitlin Armstrong (City of Oxford) and Leanna Daniels (Hollingworth Lake) to name just a few. All are close competitors and will know each other well.
City of Oxford have three scullers entered this weekend. Their A sculler is Caitlin Armstrong, who may be favourite in this event. She had an impressive 2024 season, culminating in winning the aspirational single at Henley Women’s Regatta. This year she will want to push on into the Championship category and Nottingham will be some important early season experience. Teammate Pippa Biggs is another Oxford rower on the circuit. Last year she raced at the Metropolitan Regatta and Henley Women’s Regatta and has improved each season on her results.
Naomi Holland from Upper Thames placed second at this regatta last year and is well accustomed to a single. A semi-finalist in the aspirational single at Henley Women’s Regatta in 2024, she is always in the mix and will certainly make it into the top three.
A number of the scullers entered are current or previous lightweights. Leanna Daniels (Hollingworth Lake), Heidi Taylor (Derby) and Amy Hallet (Dart Totnes) will all by vying for final places this weekend. Taylor placed third in the lightweight single at the British Rowing Championships in 2024, and will want to build on that experience this year.
Finally, Louise Brooks (Leeds University) is an up and coming sculler to look out for. Placing third in the intermediate B-final at BUCS, she will have learnt important lessons and be race ready. On the same course and in similar conditions she could be a dark horse.
Prediction
Ten scullers vying for six final spots could create some close racing in the heats. In the final expect City of Oxford’s Armstrong to take the win. The likes of Holland from Upper Thames and Leeds University student, Brooks could be close behind.
