Men’s Single
An incredible race in the men’s sculling A-final as all crews were so close together from the buzzer. Mats van Sabben led at 500 but was closely followed by the rest of the field. By the 1000m marker, Simon van Dorp had moved into first position, and everyone was prepared for him to walk away. Out of nowhere, the favourite Melvin Twellaar was out of the race; through some technical issue, his race didn’t make it to the 750. Now, Simon van Dorp was closely followed by Gert-Jan van Doorn and Lucas Keijzer. In an amazing last 500m, all three crews sprinted to the line, finishing within one second of each other. Simon van Dorp won, followed by Gert-Jan van Doorn and Lucas Keijzer, who took third place. After being the only U23 athlete to qualify for the National Championships, Lucas Keijzer went through some hard rounds to get to the A-final. A very mature race from him as he moved through the race from sixth to third, making it onto the podium in addition to winning the U23 championship.
Men’s Pair
The pairs finished the day with a reasonable headwind and stunning sunshine. The Dutch pair of Makker/van der Bij led after a dominant first 500m. Throughout the weekend, they’ve made a clear impression as they won everything on their way to the final and seemed ready to hold the streak to the finish line. The race was about second and third, a battle between Triton 2, Triton 1, and Nereus 2. At the 1500, Triton 2 were in second place but only narrowly; it was Nereus 2 of Bloemen/Tilanus who put down the effort in the last 500 to move into second place, with Berbers/Visch (Triton 2)completing the podium.
The U23 championship was left to the B-final as no U23 crews made it past the semifinal. The A.S.R. Nereus had 2 U23 crews in the B-final, so we knew it was going to Amsterdam before the light went green. The race was won by Perrotti/Van Rijn, who led all the crews from the 500 to the finish line, fighting off a strong sprint from Phocas (Van Pruissen/Esseveldt). They won the U23 championship pair.
