Nestled in Hen and Chicken Bay, the Newington College Boat Club boasts a strong and proud legacy amongst the AAGPS. Having been one of 4 crew who won their inaugural Head of the River, those who have worn the black and white have left a list of outstanding achievements both in and outside of school.
Within the college, recent success include Nicholas Tretheway who was selected for the 2025 NSW Junior Pathway Men’s Youth 2nd Eight, the 2025 First Four comprised of Mitchell Smit, Jed Robertson, Jasper Pattinson, Liam Mitchell-Zancanaro and Oliver Eason (coxswain) (Class of 2025) who broke the record for the fastest Newington Four and the 2025 2nd VIII who won Gold at the NSW Schoolboy Head of the River. This is testament to their dedication and their director, Will Anders who has coached the 2023 and 2024 2nd VIII to podiums in their respective categories, won the Victorian Head of the River, and Semi-Finalist of the 2016 Princess Elizabeth Challenge Cup at Henley Royal Regatta.
Noticeable alumni include many students who represented Australia at a national and olympic level, including the Stewart Brothers, James, Geoff and Stephen (Class of 1991) who all represented Australia at the 2004 Athens Olympics winning bronze in the Men’s Eight; Alex Nichol (Class of 2017) who recently won silver at the World Rowing Cup in Lucerne and the Grand Challenge cup at the 2025 Henley Royal Regatta; and a legend within the AAGPS, Michael Morgan OAM (Class of 1964) who won Head of the River on Newington’s Centennial year of 1963, won Silver at the 1968 Mexico Olympics and coached the 1st VIII for 26 years, and has the most Major Rennie Trophies out of all AAGPS coaches.
