National Schools’ Regatta 2025 – Open Championship Pairs Preview

It’s that time of year again; the National Schools’ Regatta is just around the corner, and the excitement is building fast. The pair’s event is particularly unpredictable and fiercely competitive among the many thrilling matchups. With relatively few opportunities for crews to race in pairs this season, it’s anyone’s guess who will emerge victorious, and that makes it all the more compelling.

Emanuel School

Leading the charge is Emanuel School, a name already etched into the history of this event. Having claimed victory in the pairs a few years ago, they return with renewed determination and serious intent. Their first eight placed a strong sixth in their category at the Schools’ Head of the River, and if their top two athletes are anything to go by, they’ll bring power, precision, and a well-drilled partnership to the water. Don’t be surprised if they’re back on the podium’s top step by Sunday.

Tideway Scullers School

Sitting in the bow seat for Tideway Scullers is Hueffer, formerly of the St Paul’s School’s second eight. With his background in one of the country’s most renowned rowing programmes, he brings a wealth of racing experience and technical polish. Now representing Scullers, he’ll be eager to prove that the switch was a smart move – and what better way to do that than with a medal, or perhaps even a win? Expect this crew to be technically sharp and highly motivated

Nottingham Union RC

With less travel time this year and the advantage of racing on their home course, Nottingham Union will be a crew to watch. They’ll likely be more than familiar with the unique quirks of the Nottingham course, especially the infamous wind, and will be well-versed in handling the more challenging conditions. Setting off fourth, they’ll have a solid view of their competition and the motivation to chase the top spots. Watch for this local pair’s punchy middle thousand and a confident finish.

This is one event that could truly go any  way — and that’s exactly why it’s set to be one of the most exciting races of the weekend.
