As the summer racing calendar approaches its crescendo, all eyes turn to Dorney Lake this weekend for the 2025 Marlow Regatta, the final litmus test before Henley Royal Regatta. With the draw for the big dance looming and the pressure of pre-qualification mounting, the championship quads event promises a high-octane showdown between elite domestic clubs, international contenders, and rising university talent.
Traditionally a key marker of form ahead of Henley’s Prince of Wales Challenge Cup, this event has long served as both a proving ground and a prediction tool. With Leander Club aiming to extend their recent dominance but having stumbled slightly at the Metropolitan Regatta, challengers like Reading University and Marlow Rowing Club look ready to disrupt the script.
Leander Club:
Leander needs little introduction, and their championship quad at the 2025 Marlow Regatta is one to watch closely. At the helm is stroke Jamie Hindle-Daniels, a World Rowing Championship sculler and seasoned athlete, renowned for his impeccable timing and ability to maintain a relentless race pace. His leadership and experience drive the crew’s rhythm and cohesion.
In the bow seat is Irish international Jack Keating, aiming to add another red box to an already impressive collection. His technical precision and composure under pressure perfectly counterbalance the power at stroke. His international experience adds a layer of tactical awareness, allowing the quad to confidently adapt mid-race.
Together, Hindle-Daniels and Keating form a dynamic combination of power and finesse that is difficult to match. They are joined by Oliver Costley, a returner from last year’s winning crew, and Dominic Frederico, the 2024 U23 World Rowing Championship silver medallist in the double. This outstanding supporting cast puts Leander’s quad in a prime position to challenge for top honours at Marlow and continue their dominance through to the Royal.
Reading University Boat Club:
Reading University Boat Club has been steadily building a reputation as one of the UK’s most promising university programmes, and their championship quad reflects that upward trajectory.
Leading the charge at stroke is Matt Long, possibly the UK’s most exciting up-and-coming sculler. A powerful and technically sharp practitioner, Long has impressed throughout the BUCS and U23 trials season. Reading could not be off to a better start with his tactical race sense, technical mastery, and killer side-by-side instinct.
In the bow seat, Reading relies on the experience and poise of Norwegian international Erik Vaktskjold, whose smooth technique and calm race-day presence help the crew maintain balance and composure under pressure. Together, Long and Vaktskjold provide a blend of grit and finesse that forms the backbone of the crew.
The crew has shown solid pace in recent competitions and looks ready to challenge the established club crews at Marlow. With their mix of youthful energy and strategic rowing, Reading’s quad is set to make a serious statement in the championship category this season.
Marlow Rowing Club:
Marlow Rowing Club arrives at the 2025 Marlow Regatta with a proud history of strong performances and a reputation for producing tough, resilient crews.
Their quad is anchored by stroke seat Alfred Heath, the three-seat of last year’s victorious Wyfold Challenge Cup Four. His aggressive, high-tempo style consistently drives the boat forward, and his experience brings a level of confidence the crew can feed off.
In the bow seat is James Doleman, a returning Henley Royal Regatta winner whose steady and technically precise rowing complements Heath’s power. Having spent the last two seasons alongside Heath, Doleman brings crucial balance and finesse to the boat, especially in challenging race conditions. Together, they form a dynamic duo that brings nous and race savviness.
Despite facing stiff competition, Marlow’s squad has demonstrated steady improvement over the season and will look to harness the home advantage. Their combination of grit and experience makes them a strong contender in the championship field.
Windsor Boys’ School Boat Club:
Windsor Boys’ School Boat Club enters the 2025 Marlow Regatta with the hunger and determination of a crew ready to shake up the established order. Fresh off a dominant performance at the National Schools’ Regatta, where they powered through to win the championship quad, Windsor know they are still underdogs when facing older, bigger, and more experienced club crews at open regattas.
This year, Windsor’s quad isn’t just hunting medals; they are seeking a challenge that will push them ahead of their ultimate goal: securing The Fawley Challenge Cup at Henley Royal Regatta. Their recent results have proven their speed and potential, but Marlow will be a different beast, lining them up against seasoned senior crews from national clubs and universities.
Windsor’s young crew are eager to prove they can compete with the best. This regatta offers the perfect proving ground, a critical test to refine their speed, composure, and race-day tactics under pressure.
If Windsor can rise to the occasion, this could be the year their juniors make a serious statement in the open field, pushing closer to Henley Royal Regatta glory and establishing themselves as a crew to watch on the national stage.
Prediction
I think Leander will successfully retain their title; they just have too much experience and firepower. Reading will push them every single stroke of the way, but they will just miss out in the end. Marlow has a strong chance of finishing third, and Windsor Boys‘ will make it into the A-final.
