Hammersmith Head 2026 – Open Club Eights Preview

With 22 entries, this promises to be a highly competitive event. It serves as a key race in the build-up to Head of the River, the pinnacle and finale of the head racing season. Although shorter than the championship course, this race is an important indicator of form, offering insight into which crews are likely to dominate the upcoming and much-anticipated regatta season. This is especially significant given the number of cancellations caused by this year’s challenging weather conditions.

Putney Town Rowing Club

Putney Town will be chasing down Curlew, who start ahead of them, but they benefit from racing on home water, giving them a slight advantage. Their performances at Fours Head were encouraging, with club fours placing 17th, 44th, and 50th, alongside a 7th-place finish in the quad.

If Putney can successfully merge athletes from these boats into a cohesive eight, they are well placed to apply pressure to the Curlew crew. The entry of two eights further highlights the depth and strength of their men’s squad.

Twickenham Rowing Club

Twickenham sit firmly in the middle of the pack. Recent weather conditions and draw off have limited their water time, forcing the squad to rely heavily on land training. While this will undoubtedly have built strength and power, the key question is whether this will translate effectively onto the water. They may face technical challenges against crews who have had more consistent water time and longer periods of training together as full crews.

Vesta Rowing Club

Vesta also races on home turf and arrives with clear momentum. Their 12 entries at Fours Head underline the impressive depth of their sweep squad. Crucially, they have benefited from greater racing exposure than many of their competitors, including the Remenham Challenge. This additional experience racing in established line-ups could give them a decisive edge.

Lea Rowing Club

Lea arrive with strong recent results, having placed first and second in the open fours at Wallingford Head, alongside a third-place finish in the eight. These performances highlight the strength at the top end of their squad and will put them in good standing heading into this race.

Kingston Rowing Club

Like many crews, Kingston have been impacted by high river flow and limited water time. However, they have made effective use of alternative training venues, regularly training at Dorney on weekends. This additional water time will be valuable both in this race and as they build towards the regatta season.

Prediction

Vesta Rowing Club are my favourites to take the win in this event. Their combination of squad depth, home-water advantage, and superior racing experience puts them in a strong position to come out on top.
