Fours Head of the River 2025 – Women’s Academic Coxed Fours Preview

The women’s academic coxed fours is shaping up to be one of the most competitive categories at this year’s Fours Head, with powerhouse programmes from Cambridge, Oxford, and the University of London leading a deep academic field. Crews from top university programmes will be looking to assert dominance and set the tone ahead of the head racing calendar, as technical endurance and Tideway experience come into play over the demanding 6.8km course from Chiswick to Putney. With tight margins expected between and within crews, the line taken by the coxes could prove decisive.

University of London Boat Club

Going off first in the category, the University of London Boat Club crew will be setting the pace for those behind. As weathered Tideway warriors, ULBC’s crews will have the home advantage, familiar with every bend and every angle of the river. Their women’s squad has a strong history of success on home water, with the ULBC first eight taking silver in the academic category at the Women’s Head of the River Race of the River Race last year. They’ll be eager to use that local knowledge to their advantage. Expect confident steering, a composed rhythm, and a crew well-tuned to the nuances of the course.

Cambridge University Boat Club

Cambridge University Boat Club arrives with strength, fielding four coxed fours this year. The Light Blues are in fine form, with a new club 2k record last week, as well as gaining valuable long-course experience at the Head of the Charles Regatta, where the crew finished in the top ten. Cambridge have also been training on the Tideway in the lead-up to the race, fine-tuning their understanding of the course and its landmarks. Emelie Eldrancher, who has represented Team USA, will cox the first of the Cambridge fours; her tactical expertise and composure could make all the difference on race day.

Oxford University Boat Club

Oxford University Boat Club have entered an impressive five fours into the category, showcasing both depth and intent. The Dark Blues have been training on the Tideway in recent weeks, preparing to handle its challenging currents and tight racing lines. Their first boat off, stroked by Pippa Harkin — who represented England at the 2024 Home International Regatta — will look to lead a strong Oxford field. With internal competition fierce and a point to prove against long-time rivals Cambridge, Oxford will be aiming to deliver a powerful performance across the category.

Imperial College Boat Club

Imperial College Boat Club enter this year’s Fours Head with a smaller women’s contingent than usual, just three boats across the whole event, but that only underlines the calibre of their crews. With such a large and competitive women’s squad overall, it’s likely these line-ups represent the top end of their roster, bringing together their fastest athletes. Imperial’s crews will look to make full use of their home advantage.

Prediction

With powerhouse programmes like Cambridge, Oxford, and the University of London leading the charge, and strong challenges expected from Bath, Cardiff, and Imperial, the women’s academic coxed fours promises to be an exciting category. I predict that Cambridge will take the win, with a tight margin for second and third place between Imperial College and the University of London.
