Erne Eights Head of the River Race 2026 – Men’s Intermediate Eights Preview

With the domestic regatta season right around the corner, Erne Eights Head of the River Race has historically marked the end of the winter head season and is an opportunity for athletes, coaches and supporters alike to see the first glimpses of which crews have the potential to take home a pot at the National Championships in a few months’ time. However, the Erne course, one of the longest events in Ireland, is not for the faint of heart. It is both a physical and navigational challenge for athletes and coxes alike, with the 6.8-kilometre course containing two hairpin bends. This year, the men’s Intermediate eights have seven crews vying for the top spot, so racing is set to be fierce.

Commercial Rowing Club

Commercial Rowing Club appears to have a stacked squad this season with four men’s crews entered across the senior, intermediate and club categories, the most of any club racing. With two crews entered in the senior event, it is safe to assume this is the squad’s third boat; however, there is still no shortage of talent in the lineup. Joe Tanner, formerly of the University of Limerick, sits in the four-seat, and with multiple national championship titles to his name, he’s undoubtedly one to watch. Sitting in the stroke seat is Tadhg McKnight, who returns to the sport after a few years away. Last year, Commercial finished fourth at this event, so these athletes will want to at the very least race their way to a podium finish this year.

University of Galway Boat Club ‘A

The victors of this event at last year’s renewal, University of Galway Boat Club, will want to reclaim their title this weekend. However, this boat is a significantly different lineup than last year’s one, with seven seat, James Hurley, the sole remaining athlete from last year’s crew. There are several significant new additions to this crew, including Eoin Balfe, who represented Ireland at the 2024 Coupe de la Jeunesse. However, this crew’s greatest asset is cox Katelyn Fee, an Enniskillen native who will be extremely familiar with this course and prove invaluable in navigating this boat to the finish line.

Queens University Belfast Boat Club

Queen’s University Belfast Boat Club has enjoyed great success over the past number of years in the sculling discipline with multiple championship wins and Henley Royal Regatta appearances in quads and doubles; however, they have mostly shied away from sweeping, having not even raced this event last year. This crew appears to have some potential, having raced at BUCS Head of the River Race last weekend, where they finished seventh out of 32 crews in the open Intermediate eights. Two standout athletes in this crew include Ronan Gibbon, who raced in the Queen’s quad that competed in The Prince of Wales Challenge Cup at Henley Royal Regatta in 2024, and Tim Murphy, who joined the club this year after previously competing with Newcastle University.

Prediction

It is hard to predict who will reign supreme this weekend, with many crews having done little to no racing so far this year; however, given the calibre of the athletes in the boat, I do think we will see the Queen’s crew take the win in this event.
