Based out of the Coastal Rowing Centre, Studland in Dorset, Coastal Barbarians RC specialises in accessibility and inclusivity in coastal rowing, offering coaching, training, racing and regattas. As most of their members live further afield and are members of other clubs, they are known as “Tourists”. In addition, they also offer “Supporter” memberships for volunteers and sponsors. They place emphasis on the mental and physical benefits of coastal rowing and aim to grow the coastal rowing community at the grass roots level.
Alongside promoting recreational rowing, Coastal Barbarians RC enter several competitions including the Coastal Rowing League, where they placed third in 2023 and second in 2024 in the Gill Mannings Cox Overall Champions Trophy. They also sent crews to the 2024 World Rowing Coastal Championships in Genoa, Italy, where the women’s coxed quad placed 16th and the double came 22nd.
Last April, Coastal Barbarians hosted their first ever Swanage Regatta, one of nine events in the 2024 Coastal Rowing League calendar. This attracted crews from across England and Wales to race on a four- or six-kilometre course. After the success of the event, they will be hosting another regatta in May next year as part of the 2025 Coastal Rowing League.
