Student athletes across the UK will be loading trailers and heading to the Tyne this weekend for BUCS Head. After a winter of heavy rain and widespread cancellations, crews will be eager to put down meaningful markers for the season ahead. Ten crews line up in the Open Championship Coxless Four, all chasing BUCS points and bragging rights at one of the highlights of the head season.

Durham University Boat Club

Last year’s winners in this event return to the Tyne looking to defend their title. Durham University Boat Club (DUBC) have entered two crews, and while exact lineups remain unconfirmed, their only major indicator this season, Rutherford Head, suggests they are on strong form. Durham won this boat class convincingly, finishing over 20 seconds ahead of the next fastest crew, several of whom they will face again this weekend. With valuable BUCS points on offer, DUBC look well‑placed to challenge for the top spot once more.

Newcastle University Boat Club

The reigning Victor Ludorum champions will be eyeing another strong BUCS Head campaign. Newcastle’s crew combinations are also unknown, but their performance at Rutherford Head provides some insight. Racing in the same boat class, the Blue Star finished more than 20 seconds behind Durham. However, Newcastle’s familiarity with the Tyne should not be underestimated. Without confirmed lineups, it is difficult to gauge their exact competitiveness, but if similar crews to Rutherford race again, a podium finish is possible.

Edinburgh University Boat Club

As another heavyweight programme, Edinburgh make the journey south with ambitions of their own. Their only major result so far this season also comes from Rutherford Head, where they placed third behind Durham and Newcastle. Crucially, they incurred a ten‑second penalty for late boating; without it, they would have posted a faster raw time than Newcastle. If a comparable crew takes to the water this weekend, Edinburgh should be firmly in the hunt for a top‑three finish.

Imperial College Boat Club

Imperial College Boat Club head north from Putney after a strong autumn. Last year, their top crew in this event secured third place, and this season they have already demonstrated their competitiveness by winning in the open academic coxless four at Fours Head, with another crew placing fifth. Two boats are entered for BUCS Head, and if they mirror the Fours Head combinations, Imperial’s top crew will be well‑positioned to contest for the top three.

Prediction

With lineups unknown, predictions come with caveats; however, based on their Rutherford Head form, Durham University Boat Club appears the strongest contender to retain their title. Imperial College London looks capable of pushing for second, while Edinburgh University Boat Club could edge into third if they reproduce their autumn speed.
