Australian University Games 2025 – Women’s Eight Preview

This year’s women’s eight event at the Australian University Games will be a rematch to try to turn the tables on the dominance of Sydney University in 2024. Whether the other three universities can take the gold medal spot from the blue and gold institution remains to be seen.

Sydney University

If the 2024 women’s eight results say anything about Sydney University, it demonstrates the sheer depth of their squad, winning both the first and second place medals. Although they have only entered one eight this year (meaning they may have to settle for only one crew on the podium instead of two), the talent contained within that sole entry is impressive. Sophia Wightman has had multiple appearances on the national team, representing Australia at the Junior and U23 level and at the World University Championships in 2024. Alongside the success of Tiffany Botha, who represented Australia in the U23 women’s eight, Sydney University clearly has some individual talent on display. It would be a surprise if Sydney University did not claim the top spot this year; however, unexpected results are always possible.

Adelaide University

Adelaide University is the other clear contender for the women’s eight this year. Having come third in 2024, behind both Sydney University eights, a second-place finish will be the minimum they would accept. Members of this Adelaide University eight also have some solid results between them. Anja Felderhof and Caroline McNally were both members of the South Australia women’s youth eight in 2025, and had a successful championships in their own right, claiming a medal in the U21 quad, as well as making A finals in other events. Lulu Colgrave also medalled at ARC this year, in the U23 lightweight women’s double scull. Adelaide University will be using these athletes to climb the podium this year; however, it remains to be seen how they measure up against Sydney University.

Monash University & The University of NSW

Rounding out the four entries in this event are Monash University and The University of New South Wales (UNSW). In 2024, Monash University took both fourth and fifth place, while UNSW came last, in 6th position. With some returners from 2024, new members in both crews, and a spot on the podium open for the taking, these crews will probably be racing each other for third place. Seemingly behind the two main contenders.

Prediction

Sydney University will almost certainly take the top spot, with their incredible depth allowing them to back up previous years’ performances. Adelaide University will follow them in second place, who also have some impressive athletes, but perhaps not to the same extent. Based on prior results, Monash University is a clear contender for third place and will most likely take home the last medal spot, but there is little evidence to suggest that The University of NSW are not able to disrupt Monash University’s dreams of a medal this year.
