2026 American Youth Cup I – Men’s Youth Double Preview

The American Youth Cup I opens a four-part series held each year in the Southeast United States. This first iteration of the series features mostly Southeast and Midwestern teams, with some Northern programmes often taking part in a training trip before or after the regatta. Much of the eastern half of the United States has seen the coldest and snowiest winter in the last five years, severely limiting or eliminating water time for many visiting crews. This dynamic could play out as some of the top competitors will have very few strokes under their belt before they get to the line in the men’s youth double. This opening race will set the benchmark for teams to see how they stack up on the road to the USRowing Youth National Championships in June.

Miami Rowing Club

Highly technical and always a force to be reckoned with in the sculling events, Miami Rowing Club will be in pole position to secure the gold after falling just short of Miami Beach the past year. This rematch will “feed families,” as one astute observer pointed out from the bank. Expect a high rating and a punchy style from this Miami double, as they look to secure an early advantage. This crew will likely be doubling up in the men’s quad and pair, so look for them all throughout the weekend.

Miami Beach Rowing Club

Last year’s defending champions, Miami Beach, will be looking to defend their title and return to the A-final this year at the USRowing Youth National Championships. After impressive semifinal performances in 2024 and 2025, Miami Beach seemed to run out of juice on Sunday and missed out on the podium. This race will be important, not only as a benchmark but to re-establish early-season confidence.

Sarasota Crew

Sarasota are traditionally regarded as a sweep powerhouse in the Southeast, but any entry from this deep programme cannot be counted out. This hometown team will have been on the water for the past several weeks and will be ready to race. Known for their larger athletes and technical dexterity, expect long and strong strokes from this double.

Orlando Area Rowing Society

Another Florida team known for their sweep proficiency, O.A.R.S. has shown that it can field quality sculling boats in the past few years. In 2023, their youth double of Tyler Murphy (Stanford) and Ian Ballard nearly clinched the Florida State Title before winning silver at the USRowing Youth National Championships and posting the fastest time in the pair at U19 trials. Known for their eights, don’t count out O.A.R.S. for a sneaky podium spot.

Prediction

The race for gold will be between Miami and Miami Beach. Expect these two class doubles to separate early from the field. The fight for bronze will be fierce, and the inclusion of several ‘B’ entries will certainly make for an interesting final. It is not totally impossible that Miami or Miami Beach’s ‘B’ entry could make a run for the bronze, but I see O.A.R.S. rounding out the podium.
