This weekend, the 40th edition of the Tromp Boat Races will take place in Hilversum. With hundreds of boats and over a thousand rowers participating, it is the most significant event for junior, student, masters, and senior rowers.
The competition comes at an exciting time. Many rowers in the Netherlands only take up rowing during their time at university, in their university town. After a selection process, the lucky few take their seat in the first-year boats, either in the eights, the coxed fours or the quads. The following year, they once again have to go through a selection process. The process is longer and more challenging, but if successful, it will make them part of the ‘middengroep’, which can be translated as the ‘intermediate crew’. The Tromp Boat Races take place approximately eight weeks into the selection process for these intermediate boats, making it a race that could indicate which rowers we will see compete again later this year.
Argo Three
Out of the eighteen women’s coxed four crews competing this weekend, fourteen are composed primarily of rowers who are taking part in the ‘intermediate crew’ selection process for the very first time. Among all the competing crews, Argo Three stands out as the only team made up entirely of rowers who have previously rowed at this level. This means that each rower not only has more general experience, but they also have more race-day experience.
Okeanos & Laga Two
Some crews are made up of seasoned and first-time ‘intermediate’ rowers, such as Okeanos and Laga Two. Both these crews are made up of two previous ‘intermediate’ rowers and two who are fresh out of the first-year eights. Okeanos has placed their two seasoned rowers in the stroke pair, allowing them to set the steady rhythm that comes with experience for the rest of the crew. This strategic decision could be to give the less experienced rowers a strong and reliable rhythm to follow. Laga Two has placed their most experienced rowers in the middle of the boat. One might imagine that this set-up is to maximise power underwater.
Skøll
The last crew, consisting of experienced intermediate rowers, is Skøll. Three of their athletes have previously competed at the ‘intermediate’ level, giving the crew a solid foundation of experience to build on.
Prediction
Looking at the level of experience across all crews, Argo Three appears best positioned to deliver the strongest performance. However, it’s always possible that one of the crews competing at this level for the first time will rise to the occasion. The combination of nerves and determination surrounding the strict selection process always brings an unpredictable edge to racing.
