In a few days, the city of San Diego, California, will host one of the West Coast’s most competitive fall regattas, drawing attendance from some of the country’s best clubs. With junior events ranging from under-16 to under-19, the regatta creates a landscape for fast-paced racing and tight finishes, as well as an opportunity to claim redemption over results from earlier in the season. Clubs such as San Diego Rowing Club, Marina Aquatic Center, and Newport Aquatic Center are already national title holders and will now test their speed and teamwork in a regional setting.
The San Diego Fall Classic will be one of the last regattas of the season for many clubs, as the weather gets colder and coaches shift their focus to preparing for optimal spring performance. However, this makes the race all the more competitive; clubs have been honing and improving their head-racing skills for months, and this is the final chance to win a title at a major regatta. Amid 39 clubs, there are four specific clubs to watch this Sunday in the youth women’s events.
San Diego Rowing Club
With the largest overall entry among juniors this year, San Diego brings depth across the women’s eight, coxed four, quad, double, and single, and crucially, home-water experience on Mission Bay’s bridges and turns. On a USRowing Level, San Diego’s Women’s Youth eight came fourth in the Southwest Youth Championships, followed by the women’s second varsity eight coming in third at that same regatta and 18th overall at the USRowing National Championships. Recent Fall Classic editions have consistently shown San Diego as a powerhouse programme, with their U19 eight coming in first at the 2024 San Diego Fall Classic. San Diego currently has entries in eight youth women’s events. San Diego can be expected to show consistent speed across events, but the true test will be whether they can surpass their previous results and secure their sweeping hulls onto the podium.
Marina Aquatic Center Junior Rowing
Marina Aquatic Center‘s women bring a well-rounded profile across sweep and sculling. The programme’s coastal fundamentals translate to efficient head‑race pacing, particularly in the quad and double, while their coxed fours have the composure to navigate the bridges cleanly. MAC particularly excels in the younger events, with both their U17 coxed four and U16 coxed quad coming in third at the 2025 USRowing Youth National Championships. Last year, at the 2024 San Diego Fall Classic, all women’s MAC entries placed in the top ten of their respective events, with the women’s U17 eight claiming gold. MAC has entries in eight youth women’s events, spanning from U16 to U19. All spectators should keep a lookout for MAC, as they are a top contender in all the junior women’s events for this year’s classic.
Rose City Rowing Club
Rose City Rowing Club enters the 2025 San Diego Fall Classic with a reputation for strong women’s junior sculling and sweep lineups that travel well, routinely fielding competitive quads, doubles, and fours alongside fast eights throughout the fall season. Although they aren’t local to Southern California, the Portland team excelled at the 2024 San Diego Fall Classic, taking both silver and bronze in the women’s U19 eights event. Rose City has had an exceptional fall 2025 season so far, with its women’s youth eight finishing 22nd of 86 at the Head of the Charles, as well as multiple podium finishes at the 2025 American Lake Classic. Overall, Roce City has consistently demonstrated technical efficiency and mid-course rhythm to convert in head race formats. With multiple junior women’s entries across boat classes and a track record of reliable fall speed, Rose City profiles as a top contender to feature on the podium in several women’s junior events this year.
