2025 Princeton Chase – Men’s Lightweight Eights Preview

The 2025 Princeton Chase promises another fiercely contested edition of one of collegiate lightweight rowing’s staple fall regattas. Twenty crews will line up for the men’s lightweight eight on Lake Carnegie, a testament to the depth and competitiveness of the Eastern Sprints circuit. With defending champion Princeton serving as host, perennial power Cornell restored to top form, and fast-improving Penn and Navy ready to make a challenge, this year’s race could have the closest margins yet.

Princeton University

Reigning Chase champion Princeton University will be tough to dethrone on home waters. The Tigers’ 2024 A-boat, featuring Adam CaslerReuben Cook, and Hidde Lycklama, set the standard last autumn with a 12.31-second victory, ahead of Cornell and Penn. With most of last year’s crew returning and training daily on Lake Carnegie’s turns and bridges, the Tigers are in good form to take the victory on their home course.

Cornell University

Cornell University has given notice. The Big Red was fewer than a second behind Princeton in 2024 and followed it up with a solid runner-up finish at the 2025 Head of the Charles. Coxswain Aden Walsey leads a veteran crew that includes Eliott SwinneyAndrew Hohlt, and Nathan Bechard, all part of a well-balanced eight that excels at consistency and mid-race punch. Expect them to start aggressively, seeking to turn the tables on last year’s narrow defeat.

University of Pennsylvania

The University of Pennsylvania rounds out the top returning podium finishers, placing third at both the 2024 Chase and this fall’s Head of the Charles. Penn’s lightweight program is experiencing a resurgence under a stable coaching core, with most of its 2025 IRA medal-winning crew in the boat. While full seatings have not been released, the Quakers’ combination of fitness and returners will manifest in very base-rate speed and consistency. Their hallmark controlled aggression would make them the dark horse to derail the Princeton-Cornell clash.

U.S Naval Academy

The U.S. Naval Academy is another serious contender. With five entered lightweight eights for 2025, more than any other program, Navy’s depth ensures at least one lineup with the potential to break into the top four. Their top crew finished just off the podium last year and has gained speed this fall by virtue of improved technical discipline and sheer volume. I would expect Navy to race hard and expect a medal from them.

Prediction

Trailing the front group, Georgetown, MIT, and Mercyhurst will all battle for top-ten finishes, testing out new combinations ahead of the spring season. Nevertheless, the big picture is the battle between Princeton‘s home-course precision, Cornell‘s increasing tempo, Penn‘s growing consistency, and Navy’s depth. With medals oftentimes determined by seconds alone, the 2025 Princeton Chase men’s lightweight eight should be an early glimpse at who will be leading the pack into next spring’s Eastern Sprints and IRA Championships. I see Princeton on top this weekend.
