2025 Irish Rowing Championships – Men’s Junior Eights Preview

One of the top races of the Irish rowing calendar is to be staged at the National Rowing Centre this weekend as eight junior men’s eights compete for national championship honours. With seasoned champions, up-and-coming talent, and little to hide, this final will be a test of nerve, power, and commitment.

St Joseph’s Boat Club

St Joseph’s have long been the force at junior level, winning the Irish championship last year, and once more, they arrive in Cork with a team capable of winning the entire event. Renowned for their ruthless pace and cohesion, the Galway-based squad will seek to lay down early and control the middle part of the race with a smooth rate set by stroke Filip Bienert.

Enniskillen Royal Boat Club

Enniskillen’s strength lies in its steadiness and intensive training. This group refuses to be ruffled, even in the heat of championship racing. With a silky, seamless flow and a run of wins in Cork and Lough Rinn regattas, it’s acquired the habit of staying calm and winning when it matters. Enniskillen will be especially hungry after coming second last year.

Coláiste Iognáid A

Long respected for their technical smoothness, Coláiste Iognáid A have been busily making themselves respectable contenders in unobtrusive style. Stroke Oisín O Conaire sets a tidy, well-controlled rhythm, and the crew has continued to improve with each race this year and have shown impressive depth by entering two crews.

Neptune Rowing Club

Neptune hasn’t gotten the spotlight, but they have shown signs of something simmering. With athleticism across the board and an intense motivation to make some noise, this roster is very experienced and has a lot of power. Tommy Little, in the seven-seat, is known for his strength, and will no doubt be a big puller on the day.

Prediction

This is set to be a thrilling encounter, likely dictated by St Joseph’s, Enniskillen, and Coláiste Iognáid. These three seem to be at the head of the pack with something different to contribute to the competition. Neptune could easily pull a surprise with a good performance, while Castleconnell, Blackrock, Shannon, and Coláiste Iognáid B will be looking to come out of nowhere and shake things up.
