2025 Holland Beker – Men’s First Year Eight Preview

The Holland Beker is renowned worldwide for elite racing, but outside the global spotlight—at the forefront of Dutch rowing—the regatta also hosts the best six first-year eights in a straight final. One week before the end of the season, this uncategorized race will be the most prestigious title available to first-year eights in 2025.

Currently leading the championship, Nereus enjoys some home advantage, having spent the last few weeks training on the Bosbaan. Despite rotating through around 12 different athletes this season, the crew has demonstrated impressive consistency, winning over half of the categorised races. Although they can no longer be overtaken in the overall standings, the pressure remains high as they aim to assert dominance in this final test.

After struggling through the middle of the season, Skøll has found its stride, winning the last two races. They are clear rivals to their Amsterdam neighbours and know the Bosbaan just as well. Holding a five-point lead over third place, they will not only be going for a hat-trick of wins but also looking ahead to next week’s final, where they can solidify their hold on second place.

The men from Delft, Laga, have slipped in recent races. While theirs is arguably the most physically powerful boat, we have not seen the same on-water progression that other crews have shown. It is never too late, but with this being the season’s penultimate race, Laga must perform under pressure to recapture the form that defined their early season.

Njord have been the dividing line between the top four crews and the rest of the field. Although they haven’t claimed a win yet, they have been remarkably consistent. After several years of underwhelming results in the first-year championship, Njord has consistently finished in the top three at most categorised regattas this season. While competing with the top-tier crews will be difficult, the Holland Beker—given the right lane and conditions—might just offer the stage for a breakout performance.

Prediction

With home-water advantage, I would expect the winner to come from Amsterdam—but whether it will be Skøll or Nereus is harder to say. Nereus tends to thrive under pressure, undoubtedly one of those moments, but Skøll has shown steady progress throughout the year. Nereus must take a big step to hold them off and turn the tide.
