2025 Head of the Schuylkill Regatta – Men’s Championship Eights Preview

As the 2025 fall season begins to wind down, all eyes turn to the 55th anniversary of the Head of the Schuylkill regatta. Held a week after the Head of the Charles, the Head of the Schuylkill is one of the last big chances for crews to make their mark on the rowing scene before the spring season. As it has been in the past few years of this regatta, the field for the marquee championship eight event is led by local Philadelphia colleges, with a select few out-of-towners making the trip.

University of Pennsylvania

The University of Pennsylvania will be returning to defend their 2024 win in this event. After an equipment failure caused the Quakers to DNF at the Head of the Charles, Penn will be eager to prove themselves to the doubters in this event. The Quakers showed a strong showing last spring, finishing fourth in B-final at the IRA National Championship in their first varsity eight. Despite graduating 13 seniors this summer, including U23 national team member and three-time All-American Sam Sullivan, Penn should still have an incredibly strong crew. The Quakers have three boats entered in the event.

La Salle University

La Salle University enters as one of the most exciting crews to watch for in this year’s edition of the Head of the Schuylkill. As one of the fastest-rising programs in collegiate rowing at the moment, a win at the Head of the Schuylkill would be the perfect statement to announce to the entire rowing community that the Explorers have arrived. The La Salle first varsity eight enters Saturday strong off the back of a strong performance on the Charles, where they beat programmes such as Boston University, Wisconsin, and Georgetown in the Open Eight category. The Explorers have two boats entered in the event.

Temple University

Temple University is coming off a very successful 2025 spring season, capping off a win at Dad Vails and returning to the IRA regatta in the eights with a trip to Henley Royal Regatta for the first time since 2018. The Owls are also coming off a strong weekend on the Charles, having finished fifth in the Collegiate eight category, navigating a high-profile steering mishap under Elliot Bridge caused by the La Salle second varsity eight. Temple graduated a majority of their boat after the 2025 spring season, but has continued to put up strong results in what little we have seen from the Owls thus far. The Owls have four boats entered in the event.

Drexel University

Drexel University is the biggest question mark in this year’s edition of the Head of the Schuylkill. With the cancellation of the Navy Day Regatta and an absence at the Head of the Charles, we have yet to see Drexel’s speed tested this fall in any official capacity. Drexel, once in the middle of building a Dad Vail dynasty, struggled to find its footing last spring, leading to a disappointing third-place finish in last spring’s race. The Dragons will have a lot to prove this weekend with two boats entered in the event.

Predictions

Given the small sample size of the teams racing on the Schuylkill, the Championship Eight is wide open. While La Salle held a better time between themselves and Penn throughout most of their clash at Head of the Charles, the equipment malfunctions Penn had may have been disproportionately detrimental to their entire race effort. For that reason, Penn still has the edge in my eyes, although La Salle still has a very strong chance of stealing it away from the Ivy League program. Look for Temple and Drexel to fight for medals as well.
