This weekend brings us to the iconic Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, home to years of rich history within the sport, especially at the collegiate level. The Open Club Eight at the Head of the Schuylkill is the second-fastest event of the regatta, giving teams a chance to showcase the depth of their programs. The race sees University Club teams entering their top eights, whereas varsity teams that race on the Intercollegiate Rowing Association stage will typically enter their lower eights. Despite the intermixing of racing levels, this event never fails to provide excitement, showcasing the incredible talent within US collegiate rowing.
University of Pennsylvania
The Penn Quakers will be looking to win again this year and are certainly well-positioned to do so. Coming off a one-two finish in 2024 from their third and fourth varsity eights, they should have little trouble achieving a similar result this year, even with their third eight moving up to the men’s championship eight category, and only their fourth and fifth eights being entered in this event. There will surely be changes with the new season and the loss of 12 seniors, but the breadth of talent from the underclassmen and the incoming freshman class will be sure to make up for it. Racing on their home course, the Kings of the Schuylkill will likely be standing on the top step of the podium on Saturday.
Drexel University
Entering his third year, Drexel Head Coach Matt Weaver has reason to be excited for the season in front of him. With their original season-opener at the Navy Day Regatta being cancelled a couple of weekends ago, this regatta provides a second opportunity to kickstart the season at home and set the tone for the remainder of this season, as well as the upcoming spring. The Dragons are returning seven of their nine first varsity rowers from last year and will surely look to build speed in their lower eights with the addition of the incoming recruiting class. However, they face a tough challenge against the likes of Temple, La Salle, and Marietta, as well as club teams like George Washington.
La Salle University
Finishing slightly off the pace last year, La Salle will look to bounce back this year and reclaim some of the places they lost to fellow hometown teams Temple and Drexel. The program delivered a powerful performance at the Charles this past weekend, competing against the top varsity eights in the United States. While their second eight had a couple of issues that saw them fall out of the running for a top spot in the collegiate category, this weekend will be a prime opportunity to bounce back. In comparison to the competition, the program’s speed is definitely on the higher end, and La Salle will be a force to be reckoned with on the water this weekend.
George Washington University
George Washington has consistently ranked among the top club teams in the United States since its move to ACRA in 2022. Under the leadership of experienced Head Coach Dusan Nikolic, they secured a fifth-place finish in 2023 and a sixth-place finish in this event last year, making them a favourite to have another impressive performance this year. The club scene has heated up in the US recently, with teams edging closer to the speed of some of the nation’s better varsity programs, as evidenced by the performances of Purdue, Michigan, and Notre Dame this past weekend on the Charles River. I would expect George Washington to come ready to race this weekend, setting the stage for a competitive season to come.
Temple University
Yet another program that calls the Schuylkill River home, the Temple Owls are coming away from a successful Head of the Charles campaign last weekend that saw their first eight finish fifth in the men’s collegiate eight. After winning the Dad Vail Regatta last spring, they fell to La Salle just a few weeks later at the IRA Championships. Engaged in a constant back-and-forth with their fellow Philadelphia foes, Temple is always a program that should be taken seriously, and I look forward to seeing what they bring to the course.
Predictions
At the end of the day, this event will largely come down to the number of entries in the event above it, the Open Championship Eights. Teams like Temple currently have their top four eights entered into the Championship Eight event, while others, such as Marietta and La Salle, only have their top two eights entered, giving them an advantage in the lower boats event against some more developmental crews from the competition. On race day, I’d stay prepared to see any combination of the crews mentioned above, plus a few more that may have developed speed in the offseason. As for the top spot, however, I’m putting my money on the University of Pennsylvania. It’s difficult to match the speed of the Ivy League, and nobody on the Schuylkill does it better than Penn. They’ll be ready to take control from the chute on Saturday, leading comfortably from start to finish.
