The Open Single Sculls at the Head of the Schuylkill is one of the most physically demanding and tactically challenging events on the weekend. With a field made up of national team athletes, rising domestic stars, and experienced club scullers, the race promises a mix of speed, endurance, and strategy. While many will line up hoping to make a statement, only a handful have the form and experience to contend for the top spots. Here’s a look at the scullers most likely to make an impact this weekend.
Justin Schmidt – Conshohocken Rowing Center Inc.
Justin Schmidt enters the Head of the Schuylkill as one of the leading contenders for the title. Representing Conshohocken Rowing Center, the University of Delaware alum has established himself as one of the strongest lightweight scullers in the country. Schmidt’s 2025 campaign has been nothing short of impressive. He claimed victory in the Lightweight Men’s Single at the Head of the Charles, shortly after a 10th-place finish at the World Rowing Championships in Shanghai, where he represented the USA in the Lightweight Men’s Single Sculls. Competing against the world’s top lightweight athletes, his performance at the international level demonstrated his consistency and technical polish under pressure. That experience has clearly translated into confidence on domestic waters, and his recent racing form suggests he is peaking at the right time and his efficiency and sharpness at higher rates allow him to stay competitive well beyond his weight class. With momentum from his recent victories and the composure gained from international racing, Schmidt is expected to feature prominently once again and could very well push for the overall win.
Jamie Copus – Oxford Brookes University Boat Club
Jamie Copus comes into the Head of the Schuylkill as one of the most experienced scullers in the field. Representing Oxford Brookes University Boat Club, the former American and British National team member brings years of international competition and recent strong domestic performances, making him a serious contender for the top spot. Copus raced with the USA senior team in 2023, winning bronze in the Lightweight Men’s Quadruple Sculls at the World Rowing Championships. He also won the Head of the Housatonic this season, finishing just under ten seconds ahead of Justin Schmidt, who placed third. In addition to a foundation built at Oxford Brookes and years of experience on the international stage, Copus’s current form and proven composure make him one of the leading favourites heading into the weekend.
Cedar Cunningham – Penn A.C. Rowing Association
Cedar Cunningham is a sculler to watch at the Head of the Schuylkill, bringing both speed and experience to the open single field. A Washington State University alum and member of the USA senior team, he combines international experience with strong domestic performances, making him a threat in the open single sculls. Cunningham competed at the 2025 World Rowing Championships in the Men’s Quadruple Sculls with the USA senior team. That experience racing against the world’s best crews has sharpened his pace, endurance and ability to manage a long head race. Cunningham’s combination of national team experience and polished technique makes him a contender capable of moving into the top ranks. While he may not have as many results in the single specifically as some of the other scullers, he should still be considered among the favourites this weekend.
Thomas Foltz – Penn A.C. Rowing Association
Thomas Foltz is a sculler steadily gaining experience in the open single field. A member of Penn A.C. Rowing Association, he has shown both international and domestic promise, making him a competitor to watch this weekend. Foltz raced for the USA U23 team in 2022, finishing 16th in the double sculls at the World Rowing Under 23 Championships. Domestically, he was runner-up in this event at the 2024 Head of the Schuylkill Regatta and finished 17th in the Men’s Championship Singles at the 2025 Head of the Charles. While his recent Head of the Charles result may not reflect his full potential, Foltz has shown he can compete at a high level and push for podium positions in domestic events. His combination of international exposure, technical skill, and growing experience makes him capable of moving up through the field and challenging more established scullers this weekend.
Victor Corja – Occoquan Boat Club
Victor Corja is a sculler to keep an eye on at the Head of the Schuylkill, coming into the weekend with strong momentum from recent racing. Representing Occoquan Boat Club, he has shown the ability to challenge for top spots in domestic singles competition. Corja won the Men’s Club Singles at the 2025 Head of the Charles this past weekend, a performance that contrasts with his 14th-place finish in this event at last year’s Head of the Schuylkill. His recent victory demonstrates his current speed, endurance, and command over a long head race. The contrast between last year’s result and his recent win at the Charles suggests significant improvement and form. Corja’s confidence from that victory, combined with his experience on challenging courses, makes him a contender capable of climbing the ranks and challenging for a top finish this weekend.
Prediction
The Open Single Sculls at the Head of the Schuylkill promises a close and competitive race, but I expect Jamie Copus to come out on top. After his commanding victory at the Head of the Housatonic, where he finished just under ten seconds ahead of Justin Schmidt, Copus has demonstrated both the form and composure to claim another big win. Schmidt is likely to push hard and challenge for the win, making him my pick for second place. Cedar Cunningham has the speed and technical skill to move up through the field and should round out the podium in third.
