2025 Head of the Charles – Women’s Youth Eights Preview

This year marks the 60th anniversary of the Head of the Charles Regatta. A staple of fall racing, the third week of October sees the rowing community gather in Cambridge, Massachusetts, for a three-mile contest up the Charles River. This year, the women’s eight category hosts 86 entrants from around the world. Among the 86, here are the crews to watch.

RowAmerica Rye

Based out of Rye, New York, RowAmerica Rye is a current powerhouse in youth rowing. Earlier this year, the Rye women’s eight won the USRowing Youth National Championship by a margin of over five seconds. Their track record at the Charles is impressive, having won the category outright the past three years. An early glimpse of Rye’s season hints at continuing speed; earlier this month, the Rye eight travelled to the Connecticut River to win Head of the Riverfront.

Headington School

Headington will make the trip across the pond for their second run at the Head of the Charles. In 2024, the crew from Headington placed in a respectable sixth place. The end of last season saw them victorious at Henley Royal Regatta in The Prince Philip Challenge Trophy for the second year in a row. Interestingly, Headington’s dominance at Henley Royal Regatta does leave observers wondering if their fall speed could be faster. This weekend, Headington will look to transfer their domestic dominance onto the US head racing circuit.

Greenwich Crew

Greenwich Crew has a highly respectable record in the women’s eight category at Head of the Charles. Following a win in 2021, Greenwich has placed in the top three for the past three years. Other results include a fifth-place finish at the USRowing Youth National Championships this past summer. Continually finishing just off the winners, Greenwich will look to replicate their impressive victory from 2021.

Saugatuck Rowing Club

Many in American rowing circles have noticed Saugatuck Rowing Club’s rise over the past few years. Consistently placing well at important regattas such as the Head of the Charles and the USRowing Youth National Championships, the programme made a big statement last season by sending its first-ever crew to Henley Royal Regatta. The women’s eight raced well, making it to the Friday, where they lost to Shiplake College. In terms of Head of the Charles, Saugatuck came fourth in 2023 and second in 2024. The Saugatuck women have been building a strong culture, and Head of the Charles will be an early test to see if they can take on major programmes such as Rye.

Prediction

I believe Rye can do it again. A win this year would mean four consecutive victories, and the crew will eagerly chase this feat. In second place, I predict Headington School. Although the British programme truly thrives in the late spring and summer, Headington will look at the Charles as an opportunity to continue its winning ways from Henley. Next, I predict Saugatuck over Greenwich. Both crews seem perennially close in the rankings, but with Saugatuck’s fourth-place finish at the USRowing Youth National Championships, I give them the edge to take third in Cambridge.
